Starting from the trailhead near Ennerdale Bridge, the first section of the hike takes you along the northern shore of Ennerdale Water. This glacial lake is one of the most tranquil in the Lake District, offering stunning reflections of the surrounding fells. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and a variety of bird species, including ospreys and peregrine falcons.
As you continue, the trail leads you through Char Dub, a picturesque area characterized by its dense woodland and bubbling streams. This section is relatively flat, making it a pleasant walk through nature. The forest is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including ancient oak trees and wildflowers in the spring and summer months.
The Ennerdale Valley has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Bronze Age. The valley was also used for iron ore mining in the 19th century, and remnants of this industrial past can still be seen along the trail. Look out for old mining buildings and equipment as you hike through the area.
The trail begins to ascend as you leave Char Dub, with a gradual climb of about 200 meters (656 feet). This section offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells and Ennerdale Water below. The climb is steady but manageable, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
After reaching the highest point of the trail, you will begin your descent back towards Ennerdale Bridge. The path here is well-marked and offers a mix of open moorland and forested areas. The descent provides a different perspective of the valley and lake, making it a visually rewarding end to your hike.
Throughout the hike, you will encounter a variety of wildlife and plant species. The Ennerdale Valley is part of a rewilding project, which aims to restore the natural ecosystem. This means you might spot rare species such as the golden eagle or even the elusive pine marten. The diverse habitats along the trail support a wide range of flora, from heather-covered moorlands to ancient woodlands.
Ensure you wear sturdy hiking boots, as some sections of the trail can be rocky and uneven. Bring sufficient water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail. Weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so pack a waterproof jacket and layers to stay comfortable.
Using the HiiKER app will help you stay on track and provide additional information about points of interest along the way. Enjoy your hike through one of England's most beautiful and historically rich landscapes.
