“Experience stunning views, rich history, and diverse wildlife on the 12 km Derwentwater to Rosthwaite Walk.”
Starting near the picturesque town of Keswick in Cumberland, England, the Derwentwater to Rosthwaite Walk spans approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This point-to-point trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can take a bus or drive to Keswick. If you're using public transport, the nearest bus stop is Keswick Bus Station, which is well-connected to major cities like Penrith and Carlisle. From Keswick, it's a short walk to the starting point near the shores of Derwentwater. If driving, parking is available at the Lakeside Car Park in Keswick.
The trail begins near the northern shore of Derwentwater, offering stunning views of the lake and the surrounding fells. As you set off, you'll follow a well-marked path that meanders through lush woodlands and open fields. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making for an easy start.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, deer, and a variety of bird species, including ospreys and herons. The flora is equally impressive, with ancient oak woodlands and vibrant wildflower meadows lining the path.
The Borrowdale Valley has a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period. As you hike, you'll pass by ancient stone circles and remnants of old mining operations. The area was also a favorite of the Romantic poets, including William Wordsworth, who found inspiration in its natural beauty.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is recommended for detailed maps and real-time updates. The terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are essential. Carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route.
The final leg of the hike takes you through more open countryside before descending into the village of Rosthwaite. Here, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings or catch a bus back to Keswick. The Rosthwaite Bus Stop is conveniently located near the end of the trail, providing easy access for your return journey.
