“Embark on a scenic 25 km loop from Braithwaite, exploring Lake District peaks with stunning vistas.”
Starting near the charming village of Braithwaite in Cumberland, England, this 25 km (15.5 miles) loop trail offers a moderately challenging hike with an elevation gain of approximately 2000 meters (6562 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available in Braithwaite. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Keswick, which is well-connected by bus services. From Keswick, a short bus ride or taxi can take you to Braithwaite.
The hike begins with a steady ascent towards Causey Pike, a prominent peak in the northwestern fells of the Lake District. The initial climb is steep but rewarding, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and lakes. The path is well-trodden but can be rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you approach the summit of Causey Pike, at around 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll gain approximately 450 meters (1476 feet) in elevation.
From Causey Pike, the trail continues along a ridge towards Wandope. This section is less steep but involves some undulating terrain. The ridge walk provides stunning vistas of the Newlands Valley and the distant peaks of the Lake District. Wandope itself is a less frequented peak, offering a sense of solitude and tranquility. By the time you reach Wandope, you will have covered about 7 km (4.3 miles) and gained an additional 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation.
The area around Wandope is rich in history, with ancient stone circles and remnants of old mining activities. The Lake District has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the landscape bears the marks of its long history. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including red squirrels, peregrine falcons, and, if you're lucky, the elusive red deer.
Continuing from Wandope, the trail heads towards Robinson, another significant peak in the area. This section involves a descent into a small valley before climbing again. The path can be boggy in places, especially after rain, so be prepared for wet conditions. Robinson offers a commanding view of Buttermere and Crummock Water, two of the most picturesque lakes in the region. By the time you reach Robinson, you will have hiked approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) and gained a total of around 1200 meters (3937 feet) in elevation.
The final major peak on this loop is Dale Head. The trail from Robinson to Dale Head involves a mix of grassy paths and rocky sections. Dale Head is known for its distinctive cairn and offers one of the best viewpoints in the Lake District, with a sweeping panorama of the Newlands Valley and the surrounding fells. At this point, you will have covered about 18 km (11.2 miles) and reached the highest elevation gain of the hike, around 2000 meters (6562 feet).
The descent from Dale Head back to Braithwaite is gradual and follows well-marked paths. The route takes you through lush meadows and past small streams, offering a gentle end to the hike. As you approach Braithwaite, you'll pass through the quaint village of Little Town, which is worth a short detour for its picturesque setting and historical church. The final stretch brings you back to Braithwaite, completing the 25 km (15.5 miles) loop.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. Weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so pack layers, waterproofs, and plenty of water and snacks. This trail, while rated medium, requires a good level of fitness due to the significant elevation gain and varying terrain.
