“The Buckbarrow, Seatallan, and Middle Fell Loop offers a scenic and moderately challenging hike through the Lake District.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Nether Wasdale in Cumberland, England, the Buckbarrow, Seatallan, and Middle Fell Loop offers a captivating journey through the heart of the Lake District. This 10 km (6.2 miles) loop trail features an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,297 feet), making it a moderately challenging hike suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Nether Wasdale, where limited parking is available. For those relying on public transport, the nearest train station is Seascale, approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) away. From Seascale, you can take a local bus or taxi to Nether Wasdale.
The trail begins in Nether Wasdale, a charming village known for its traditional stone cottages and proximity to Wast Water, England's deepest lake. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the serene beauty of the Lake District.
The first significant ascent is Buckbarrow, standing at 423 meters (1,388 feet). The climb is steady but manageable, offering stunning views of Wast Water and the surrounding fells. Keep an eye out for the distinctive crags that give Buckbarrow its name. The terrain here is a mix of grassy paths and rocky sections, so sturdy footwear is essential.
From Buckbarrow, the trail continues to Seatallan, the highest point on this loop at 692 meters (2,270 feet). The ascent to Seatallan is more demanding, with a steeper gradient and some uneven ground. However, the panoramic views from the summit are well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Isle of Man and the Scottish hills. This area is also rich in wildlife; you might spot red deer, peregrine falcons, and even the occasional golden eagle.
Descending from Seatallan, the trail leads you to Middle Fell, which stands at 582 meters (1,909 feet). The descent is gradual, allowing you to enjoy the lush green valleys and babbling brooks that characterize this part of the Lake District. Middle Fell offers a more intimate experience, with fewer hikers and a sense of tranquility. The summit provides excellent views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, making it a perfect spot for a rest and a snack.
The Lake District is steeped in history, and this trail is no exception. The area around Nether Wasdale has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with numerous ancient stone circles and burial mounds scattered throughout the landscape. During the hike, you may come across remnants of old shepherds' huts and dry stone walls, offering a glimpse into the region's agricultural past.
Given the varied terrain and potential for rapidly changing weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but fog and mist can roll in quickly, obscuring visibility. Always carry a map, compass, and sufficient supplies, including water, snacks, and a first aid kit.
The Lake District is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna. Along the trail, you'll encounter a variety of plant species, from hardy heather and gorse on the higher elevations to lush ferns and wildflowers in the valleys. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the abundance of species, including skylarks, buzzards, and the elusive ring ouzel.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting the Lake District.
