“Explore lakeside views, woodland walks, and historical wonders on this delightful 10 km loop near Cumberland.”
Starting near the charming town of Cumberland, England, the Bassenthwaite Lake, Lakeside Wood, and Moss Wood Walk is a delightful 10 km (6.2 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This trail offers a medium difficulty rating, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the town of Cumberland and look for parking near the Bassenthwaite Lake area. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the Keswick Bus Station. From there, you can catch a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins near the northern shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, one of the largest bodies of water in the Lake District. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the serene views of the lake, which is a haven for birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for ospreys, which are known to nest in the area.
Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll enter Lakeside Wood. This section of the trail is relatively flat and offers a peaceful walk through dense woodland. The canopy provides ample shade, making it a pleasant stretch even on warmer days. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, adding a splash of color to your journey.
Continuing for another 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll transition into Moss Wood. This part of the trail is slightly more challenging due to its uneven terrain and minor elevation changes. Moss Wood is known for its rich biodiversity, including various species of mosses, ferns, and fungi. The woodland is also home to red squirrels, so keep your eyes peeled for these elusive creatures.
As you hike through these woods, you're walking through an area steeped in history. The Lake District has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and the landscape has been shaped by centuries of human activity. The nearby village of Bassenthwaite has historical records dating back to the 12th century, and the lake itself has been a source of inspiration for poets and artists, including William Wordsworth.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be invaluable, especially in the denser sections of the woods.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail bring you back towards Bassenthwaite Lake. This section is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down as you make your way back to the starting point. The views of the lake in the late afternoon light are particularly stunning, offering a perfect end to your hike.
This trail offers a mix of lakeside views, woodland walks, and a touch of history, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
