Starting your adventure near Cumberland, England, the Base Brown, Styhead Tarn, and Great Gable Loop is a captivating 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) journey with an elevation gain of around 800 meters (2,625 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty and offers a mix of stunning landscapes, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Seathwaite, Borrowdale, which is the nearest significant landmark. There is limited parking available, so arriving early is advisable. For public transport, take a bus to Keswick and then a connecting bus to Seatoller, from where you can walk to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gradual ascent towards Base Brown. As you climb, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Borrowdale Valley. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) involve a steady climb, gaining approximately 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation. The terrain here is a mix of grassy paths and rocky sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
After reaching the summit of Base Brown, the trail descends slightly before ascending again towards Styhead Tarn. This section is about 3 km (1.9 miles) long and includes a mix of rocky paths and grassy slopes. Styhead Tarn is a picturesque mountain lake, perfect for a short break. The tarn is also a historical waypoint, used by shepherds and travelers for centuries.
From Styhead Tarn, the trail becomes more challenging as you make your way towards Great Gable. This 2.5 km (1.6 miles) stretch involves a steep ascent, gaining around 400 meters (1,312 feet) in elevation. The path is rocky and can be slippery, especially after rain, so caution is advised. Great Gable is one of the most iconic peaks in the Lake District, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding fells and valleys.
The descent from Great Gable takes you through Windy Gap and down towards Green Gable. This section is about 3.5 km (2.2 miles) and involves a mix of rocky and grassy paths. The descent can be steep in places, so trekking poles can be helpful. As you make your way back to the trailhead, you'll pass through beautiful meadows and woodlands, offering a serene end to your hike.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife, including red deer, foxes, and numerous bird species like the peregrine falcon and the golden eagle. The flora is equally diverse, with heather, bilberry, and various wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape.
The area around Great Gable holds significant historical importance. It was a training ground for British mountaineers preparing for Himalayan expeditions in the early 20th century. Additionally, the summit of Great Gable is home to a war memorial dedicated to the members of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club who lost their lives in World War I.
