Point-to-Point
“This 22 km trail from Seaham to Hart Station combines scenic coastal views with rich historical landmarks.”
Starting near County Durham, England, this 22 km (approximately 13.7 miles) point-to-point trail offers a medium difficulty rating, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers. The trailhead is accessible by both public transport and car. If you're taking public transport, you can catch a train to Seaham Station, which is a short walk from the trailhead. For those driving, parking is available near the Seaham Marina.
The hike begins at Seaham, a coastal town known for its rich maritime history. As you set off, you'll pass by Seaham Harbour, where you can see the iconic Tommy statue, a tribute to World War I soldiers. The first few kilometers are relatively flat, with an elevation gain of around 50 meters (164 feet).
Around 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Chemical Beach. This area is named after the chemical works that once operated here, and you can still see remnants of industrial activity. The beach itself is a mix of sand and pebbles, and it's a great spot to take a break and enjoy the coastal views. Be cautious of the tide times, as the beach can become inaccessible during high tide.
Continuing from Chemical Beach, the trail leads you to Nose's Point, a dramatic cliff offering panoramic views of the North Sea. This section involves a moderate climb, with an elevation gain of about 100 meters (328 feet). From Nose's Point, the trail meanders through coastal grasslands and wildflower meadows, eventually leading you to Hawthorn Hive, a secluded beach accessible via a steep descent.
Around the 10 km (6.2 miles) mark, you'll encounter Blast Beach, another historically significant site. This beach was used as a filming location for the movie "Alien 3" due to its otherworldly landscape, shaped by years of coal mining. The beach is a stark reminder of the region's industrial past, and you can still find coal seams exposed in the cliffs.
As you continue, the trail takes you through Easington Colliery, a former mining village. The terrain here is relatively flat, offering a respite from the earlier climbs. You'll pass through areas of reclaimed land, now teeming with wildlife such as rabbits and various bird species. The trail then leads you to Blackhall Rocks, where you can explore rock pools and sea caves.
The last leg of the hike involves a gentle ascent of around 50 meters (164 feet) as you make your way towards Hart Station. This section is characterized by rolling hills and farmland, offering a peaceful end to your journey. The trail concludes near Hart Station, where you can catch a train back to your starting point or arrange for a pick-up.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, as coastal conditions can change rapidly. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first aid kit, and be mindful of the tide times, especially around the beach areas.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who undertake it.
