From Penzance, you can take a local bus to Porthleven, which runs frequently and drops you off near the trailhead.
The Loe Loop is a circular route that takes you through a variety of landscapes, including coastal paths, woodlands, and open fields. The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
Starting from Porthleven Harbour, the trail initially follows the South West Coast Path. This section offers stunning views of the rugged Cornish coastline. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the Loe Bar, a natural shingle bank separating the sea from The Loe, Cornwall's largest natural freshwater lake. This is a great spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing from Loe Bar, the trail heads inland towards the Penrose Estate, a National Trust property. This section is relatively flat and takes you through lush woodlands and open parkland. The Penrose Estate is rich in history, with the Penrose House dating back to the 18th century. Keep an eye out for the estate's diverse wildlife, including deer and various bird species.
As you leave the Penrose Estate, the trail meanders along the eastern shore of The Loe. This section is particularly scenic, with the tranquil waters of the lake on one side and rolling hills on the other. After approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), you'll reach Carminowe Creek, a serene spot perfect for a picnic.
The final leg of the trail takes you back towards Porthleven. This section involves a gentle climb, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. As you descend back into Porthleven, you'll pass through more woodlands and fields, completing the loop.
The Loe Loop is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The diverse habitats along the trail support a wide range of flora and fauna. In the woodlands, you might spot bluebells and wild garlic in the spring. The lake and its surroundings are home to various bird species, including herons, kingfishers, and swans. The coastal sections offer opportunities to see marine life such as seals and seabirds.
The Loe has a rich history, with legends suggesting it was once a navigable estuary before being blocked by the shingle bar. The Penrose Estate itself has historical significance, with records dating back to the Domesday Book. The estate has been owned by the National Trust since 1974, preserving its natural beauty and historical importance.
Given the moderate difficulty of the trail, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water and snacks. Weather in Cornwall can be unpredictable, so pack a waterproof jacket and check the forecast before setting out. The trail is dog-friendly, but be mindful of livestock in certain areas.
The Loe Loop offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
