Trail Overview

Key Sections and Landmarks

Woodland Walk

The first section of the trail takes you through dense oak woodlands. This part of the trail is particularly enchanting in the autumn when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as squirrels, deer, and a variety of bird species. The woodland floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, adding a splash of color to your hike.

Lake Area

Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll come across a serene lake. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. The lake is home to various waterfowl, including ducks and swans. There are several benches and picnic spots around the lake, making it an ideal place for a short rest.

Historical Significance

As you continue, you'll pass by remnants of the old Tehidy House, which was rebuilt in the 19th century after a fire. Although the house itself is not open to the public, the surrounding gardens and parkland offer a glimpse into the estate's storied past. Informational plaques along the trail provide historical context and interesting facts about the Basset family and their influence on the region.

Open Meadows

The trail then opens up into expansive meadows, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it a pleasant contrast to the more enclosed woodland areas. During the summer months, the meadows are often filled with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees.

Navigation and Safety

While the trail is well-marked, it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. The HiiKER app is highly recommended for this purpose, as it provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is generally safe, but be mindful of uneven terrain and occasional muddy patches, especially after rain.

Final Stretch

The last part of the loop brings you back through another section of woodland before returning to the starting point at the park entrance. This section is slightly more challenging due to a few narrow paths and small streams that may require careful crossing.

Practical Tips

• Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the trail can be uneven and muddy in places.
• Bring water and snacks, especially if you plan to take breaks at the lake or meadows.
• Check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly.
