“Immerse in Cornwall's serene woodlands on this scenic 4 km loop offering moderate challenge and historic charm.”
Starting near the picturesque region of Cornwall, England, the South Wood, North Wood, and Namphillows Wood Loop is a delightful 4 km (approximately 2.5 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of Cornwall's woodlands while enjoying a manageable hike.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address, which is close to the village of St. Neot. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the St. Neot Church, from where you can walk to the trailhead. Buses from nearby towns like Bodmin and Liskeard frequently stop at St. Neot, making it accessible for hikers without a car.
The loop begins with a gentle ascent through South Wood, where you'll be greeted by a canopy of ancient oak and beech trees. The initial part of the trail is well-marked and easy to follow. As you progress, the path becomes slightly steeper, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation over the first kilometer (0.6 miles).
In South Wood, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna. The undergrowth is rich with ferns, bluebells in spring, and various species of fungi. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of woodpeckers, nuthatches, and occasionally, the elusive tawny owl.
After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you'll transition into North Wood. This section of the trail is slightly more rugged, with a few rocky patches that require careful footing. The elevation gain here is more gradual, adding another 30 meters (98 feet) over the next kilometer (0.6 miles). North Wood is known for its dense holly and hazel thickets, providing a different kind of woodland experience.
The final section of the loop takes you through Namphillows Wood, where the trail begins to descend. This part of the trail is particularly scenic, with a small stream running alongside the path. The sound of flowing water adds a tranquil ambiance to your hike. The descent is gentle, losing about 20 meters (66 feet) in elevation over the last kilometer (0.6 miles).
The area around St. Neot and these woods is steeped in history. St. Neot Church, near the trailhead, dates back to the 15th century and is renowned for its stunning stained glass windows. The woods themselves have been part of the local landscape for centuries, with some trees estimated to be over 200 years old. These woods were historically used for timber and as hunting grounds for local nobility.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of wildlife. Deer are common in these woods, and if you're lucky, you might spot one grazing in the early morning or late afternoon. The woods are also home to numerous small mammals like squirrels and hedgehogs. In terms of plant life, the diversity is impressive, with everything from ancient oaks to delicate wildflowers.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, moderate physical challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring Cornwall.
