“Explore Cornwall's stunning coastline on a rewarding 8 km loop from Penberth to Pedn Vounder Beach.”
Starting your adventure near the picturesque village of Penberth in Cornwall, England, this loop trail spans approximately 8 km (5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (1,312 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available near Penberth Cove. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in St. Buryan, from where you can take a scenic walk to the trailhead.
The journey begins at Penberth Cove, a charming fishing village that feels like a step back in time. As you set off, the path gradually ascends towards Cribba Head. This section is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you take in the stunning coastal views. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife that frequents this area, including kestrels and peregrine falcons.
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Cribba Head. The elevation gain here is about 100 meters (328 feet), offering panoramic views of the rugged coastline. From Cribba Head, the trail continues towards Logan Rock, a famous granite boulder perched precariously on the edge of the cliff. This section involves a steeper climb, so be prepared for a bit of a workout. Logan Rock itself is steeped in history; it was once dislodged by a group of sailors in 1824, only to be restored at great expense due to public outcry.
Continuing from Logan Rock, the trail descends towards Pedn Vounder Beach, one of Cornwall's most beautiful and secluded beaches. The descent is steep and can be challenging, so take your time and ensure you have good footwear. The beach is a perfect spot for a break, offering crystal-clear waters and golden sands. It's also a popular spot for naturists, so be prepared for that aspect of the local culture.
After enjoying the beach, the trail ascends once more, heading back towards Penberth. This final section is around 3 km (1.9 miles) and involves a mix of coastal paths and inland tracks. The elevation gain here is moderate, allowing for a more relaxed pace as you make your way back to the starting point. Along the way, you'll pass through areas rich in wildflowers and possibly spot some local wildlife, such as foxes and rabbits.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your experience and ensure you stay on track. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, as coastal conditions can change rapidly.
This loop trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and a moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
