Trail Highlights

As you begin your hike, you'll immediately notice the remnants of Cornwall's industrial past. The trail takes you through the historic Gonamena Tin Streamwork, where you can see the old tin mining works that date back to the 19th century. The area is dotted with ruins of engine houses and other mining structures, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's mining heritage.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail meanders through a variety of landscapes, including open moorland and wooded areas. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as buzzards, kestrels, and various songbirds. The moorland is also home to wild ponies and sheep, which you may encounter along the way.

Significant Landmarks

Navigation

To ensure you stay on track, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER. The app provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking, which can be particularly useful in the more remote sections of the trail.

Historical Significance

The Caradon Hill area was once a bustling hub of mining activity. The South Caradon Mine, which operated from the 1830s to the 1880s, was one of the largest and most productive copper mines in Cornwall. The ruins you see today are a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of the miners who once toiled here.

Practical Tips

The trail is well-marked, but the terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended. There are no facilities along the trail, so be sure to bring enough water and snacks for the journey. The weather can change rapidly, so it's wise to pack a waterproof jacket and layers.

Final Stretch

As you loop back towards Minions, you'll pass through more scenic moorland and perhaps catch a glimpse of the iconic Cheesewring, a natural rock formation that is a popular spot for climbers and photographers. The trail ends back at the village, where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest and perhaps a visit to one of the local tea rooms or pubs.
