Starting near the City of Peterborough, England, the Burghley Park Northern Loop is a delightful 10 km (approximately 6.2 miles) loop trail with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near Burghley House, a grand 16th-century country house that serves as a significant landmark and starting point.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive and park at the Burghley House car park. If you prefer public transport, take a train to Stamford Station, which is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from Burghley House. From the station, you can either walk or take a local taxi to the trailhead.

As you embark on the Burghley Park Northern Loop, you'll immediately notice the lush, manicured landscapes of Burghley Park. Burghley House itself is a marvel of Elizabethan architecture, built by Sir William Cecil, the chief advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. The house and its grounds have been meticulously preserved, offering a glimpse into England's rich history. As you hike, you'll pass by several historical landmarks, including ancient oak trees that have stood for centuries.
The trail meanders through a mix of open fields and wooded areas. In the spring and summer, the fields are often filled with wildflowers, attracting a variety of butterflies and bees. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to enjoy, as the park is home to numerous bird species, including woodpeckers, owls, and various songbirds.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll come across the Lion Bridge, an elegant stone bridge that spans a small river. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the serene surroundings. Further along, you'll encounter the Garden of Surprises, a whimsical garden filled with water features and sculptures, perfect for a brief detour.
As you loop back towards Burghley House, the trail takes you past the Deer Park, where you can often see herds of fallow deer. The final stretch of the trail offers stunning views of Burghley House from different angles, providing ample opportunities for photography.
