The estuary is a haven for species such as oystercatchers, redshanks, and even the occasional peregrine falcon.

Historical Significance

As you start your hike, you'll pass through Parkgate, a village with a fascinating history. Originally a bustling port in the 18th century, Parkgate was an important point for ships traveling between England and Ireland. However, the estuary silted up over time, transforming the area into the serene marshland you see today. Keep an eye out for the Old Quay, a remnant of the village's maritime past.

Key Landmarks and Nature

About 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the Neston Old Quay, another historical landmark. This area offers stunning views of the estuary and is a great spot for a short break. Continuing along the trail, you'll traverse through the Wirral Way, a former railway line that has been converted into a scenic walking path. This section is particularly shaded and offers a cool respite during warmer months.

At approximately 3 km (1.8 miles), you'll come across the RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands, a nature reserve that is home to a variety of wildlife. This is an excellent spot for nature lovers, offering opportunities to see rare birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The trail then loops back towards Parkgate, passing through lush meadows and offering more opportunities for birdwatching.

Navigation and Safety

Given the flat terrain and well-marked paths, navigation is straightforward. However, it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
