Tatton Mere, Saddleback Wood and Old Hall Covert Loop

Embarking on the Tatton Mere, Saddleback Wood, and Old Hall Covert Loop, hikers will traverse approximately 13 kilometers (about 8 miles) with an elevation gain of roughly 100 meters (328 feet), offering a medium difficulty level suitable for those with some hiking experience. The loop begins near Cheshire East, England, and takes adventurers through a diverse landscape of woodlands, open fields, and lakeside paths.

Getting to the Trailhead

The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available near Tatton Park, a historic estate in Cheshire. For those using public transport, buses serve the area around Tatton Park, and the nearest train station is Knutsford, from which you can take a taxi or a bus to the park entrance.

The Journey Begins

Starting near the entrance of Tatton Park, hikers will find themselves immediately immersed in the rich history of the region. Tatton Park itself is a historic estate with a neoclassical mansion, expansive gardens, and a deer park. As you move away from the estate, the trail leads towards Tatton Mere, a large lake that is a haven for waterfowl and other wildlife.

Through Woodlands and Open Fields

The path continues through Saddleback Wood, a dense area of mixed woodland where the canopy of trees provides shelter and a habitat for various bird species. The trail is well-defined but can be muddy in places, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

As you emerge from the woodland, the terrain opens up to reveal the agricultural landscape that characterizes much of Cheshire. The trail meanders through these fields, offering views of the surrounding countryside and the opportunity to spot local wildlife such as rabbits, foxes, and birds of prey.

Old Hall Covert and Return

Approaching Old Hall Covert, the trail takes a turn through another woodland area, this one known for its ancient trees and the sense of tranquility it offers. The loop then circles back towards the starting point, passing by the edge of Tatton Mere once again, where hikers can take a moment to enjoy the peaceful lakeside setting.

Throughout the hike, it's essential to be mindful of the changing weather conditions and to carry navigation tools. HiiKER is a useful app for staying on track and ensuring you're following the loop correctly.

Wildlife and Nature

The region is rich in biodiversity, and hikers should keep an eye out for the variety of species that inhabit the area. The trail offers the chance to observe different habitats and the creatures that call them home. Birdwatchers, in particular, will appreciate the diversity of birdlife around Tatton Mere and in the woodlands.

Historical Significance

The area is steeped in history, with Tatton Park being one of the UK's most complete historic estates. The park is home to a Tudor Old Hall, a medieval building that stands as a testament to the region's past. Hikers walking this loop will not only enjoy natural beauty but also the opportunity to connect with the area's rich heritage.

Preparation and Planning

Before setting out, hikers should ensure they have enough water and food for the journey, as there are limited facilities along the route. It's also advisable to check the weather forecast and dress in layers to accommodate any changes. The trail is well-marked, but carrying a map or using HiiKER for digital navigation is recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.
