Shutlingsloe and Trentabank Reservoir Walk

Starting near Cheshire East, England, this 10 km (approximately 6.2 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (about 1,312 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available at the Trentabank Reservoir car park. Initial Ascent and Trentabank Reservoir

The hike begins with a gentle ascent from the Trentabank Reservoir, a serene body of water surrounded by lush woodland. This area is part of the Macclesfield Forest, known for its dense canopy of trees and rich biodiversity. Keep an eye out for the resident red deer and various bird species, including the rare crossbill. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail will take you through this forested area, gradually gaining elevation.

Climbing Shutlingsloe

The climb to the summit is the most challenging part of the hike, with an elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet) over a distance of 1.5 km (0.9 miles). The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Cheshire Plain and the Peak District. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Welsh mountains.

Historical Significance

Shutlingsloe has historical significance, with evidence of ancient settlements and agricultural practices dating back to the Bronze Age. Return via Macclesfield Forest

The final 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail are relatively flat, making for a pleasant end to your hike.
