Trail Highlights

Bollin Brook

Starting from Langley, the trail initially follows the picturesque Bollin Brook. This section is relatively flat and shaded, making it a pleasant start to your hike. The brook is home to various species of fish and birds, so keep an eye out for kingfishers and herons. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), you will begin to notice a gradual incline as you move away from the brook and into the woodland.

Woodland and Moorland

As you ascend, the trail takes you through dense woodland, where you can spot ancient oak and beech trees. This section can be muddy, especially after rain, so waterproof boots are recommended. After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), the woodland opens up into moorland. Here, the terrain becomes rockier and the path narrower. The elevation gain becomes more noticeable, and you will start to see panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Shutlingsloe Summit

The highlight of the trail is undoubtedly the ascent to Shutlingsloe, often referred to as the "Matterhorn of Cheshire." The climb to the summit is steep but short, covering about 1 km (0.6 miles) with an elevation gain of 100 meters (328 feet). The summit offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Peak District and beyond. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Welsh mountains. This is an excellent spot for a rest and some photos.
