Historical Significance

Wicken Fen is one of the oldest nature reserves in the UK, established in 1899 by the National Trust. The area has a rich history of human habitation and land use, dating back to the Bronze Age. The fenland was extensively drained for agriculture in the 17th century, but Wicken Fen remains a rare example of undrained fenland, preserving its unique ecosystem.

Practical Tips

Given the flat terrain, the trail is suitable for families and hikers of all skill levels. However, the fenland can be wet and muddy, especially after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are several benches and viewing platforms along the route, perfect for taking a break and enjoying the scenery.
