For public transport, take a train to High Wycombe Station and then a bus (Arriva 300 or 321) to Naphill, alighting at the Naphill Village Hall stop.

The trail begins at Naphill Village Hall and quickly immerses you in the serene beauty of Naphill Common. This ancient woodland is part of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). As you start, you’ll notice the dense canopy of oak, beech, and ash trees, providing ample shade and a cool atmosphere even on warmer days.
Naphill Common: About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you’ll encounter the heart of Naphill Common. This area is rich in biodiversity, home to various bird species like woodpeckers and nuthatches. Keep an eye out for the ancient pollarded trees, some of which are over 400 years old.
Dew Pond: At approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you’ll come across a charming dew pond. Historically, these ponds were essential for watering livestock. Today, they serve as a habitat for amphibians and insects. It’s a great spot for a short break and some nature photography.
Oaks Wood: Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you’ll enter Oaks Wood. This section of the trail is slightly more challenging due to a gentle incline, but the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Oaks Wood is known for its bluebells in spring, creating a carpet of vibrant blue flowers.
The area around Naphill Common and Oaks Wood is steeped in history. During World War II, Naphill Common was used as a training ground for the Home Guard. Remnants of old trenches and fortifications can still be seen if you know where to look. Additionally, the common has been a managed woodland for centuries, with evidence of ancient coppicing techniques.
The trail is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Besides the common bird species, you might spot deer, foxes, and badgers. The flora is equally impressive, with seasonal changes bringing different plants to the forefront. In spring, look for wild garlic and bluebells, while autumn offers a spectacular display of changing leaf colors.
As you loop back towards Naphill Village Hall, the trail descends gently, offering a relaxing end to your hike. The final 1 km (0.6 miles) takes you through open fields and pastures, providing a contrasting landscape to the dense woodlands you’ve traversed.
