“Explore rolling hills, historic landmarks, and diverse wildlife on the 11 km Little Hampden and Parslow's Hillock Loop.”
Starting near Buckinghamshire, England, the Little Hampden and Parslow's Hillock Loop is a delightful 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, you can park near the village of Little Hampden. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Great Missenden, which is about 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From there, you can take a taxi or a local bus to Little Hampden.
The trail begins in the quaint village of Little Hampden, known for its picturesque cottages and the historic St. Michael and All Angels Church, dating back to the 13th century. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by rolling hills and lush woodlands, typical of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The first section of the trail takes you through dense beech woodlands, a hallmark of the Chilterns. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach Hampden House, a historic manor that has stood since the 14th century. The house is not open to the public, but its impressive exterior and surrounding gardens are worth a brief stop.
Continuing on, the trail ascends gently, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. After another 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll arrive at Parslow's Hillock, a small hamlet with a rich history. This area was once a hub for local agriculture, and remnants of old farm buildings can still be seen.
The final stretch of the loop takes you through open fields and meadows, where you might spot local wildlife such as red kites, deer, and various bird species. The trail then descends back into the woodlands, leading you back to Little Hampden. This section is approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) long and offers a mix of gentle descents and flat terrain.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be very helpful, especially in the wooded sections where paths can be less distinct.
The Chiltern Hills are renowned for their biodiversity. In spring and summer, the woodlands are carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. Keep an eye out for the distinctive red kites soaring above, a conservation success story in the region. Deer, badgers, and foxes are also commonly sighted.
The area around Little Hampden and Parslow's Hillock is steeped in history. From ancient woodlands that have stood for centuries to historic buildings like Hampden House, the trail offers a glimpse into England's rich past. The Chiltern Hills themselves have been inhabited since prehistoric times, and you may come across ancient earthworks and burial mounds along the way.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
