“Explore the scenic 14 km Great Wood, Kildridge Wood, and Park Wood Loop, rich in nature, history, and wildlife.”
Starting near Buckinghamshire, England, the Great Wood, Kildridge Wood, and Park Wood Loop is a captivating 14 km (8.7 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, the town of High Wycombe. From there, follow signs to the trailhead near the village of Great Missenden. For those using public transport, take a train to Great Missenden Station, which is well-connected to London Marylebone. From the station, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
The loop begins with a gentle ascent through Great Wood, where you'll be surrounded by ancient beech trees. This section is relatively easy, with well-marked paths that gradually lead you uphill. After about 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll reach the highest point of the trail, offering panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills.
As you continue, you'll pass through Kildridge Wood, an area steeped in history. This woodland was once part of a royal hunting ground during the medieval period. Keep an eye out for old boundary markers and remnants of ancient earthworks that hint at its historical significance.
The trail then descends into Park Wood, a haven for wildlife. This section is particularly rich in birdlife, including species like the great spotted woodpecker and the nuthatch. During spring and summer, the forest floor is carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic, adding a splash of color and fragrance to your hike.
Navigating the trail is straightforward, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER. Key waypoints include the junction at Kildridge Wood (approximately 7 km or 4.3 miles in), where the trail splits into several smaller paths. Stick to the main loop to avoid getting sidetracked.
Around the 10 km (6.2 miles) mark, you'll come across an old, abandoned mill, a relic from the 18th century. This makes for a great spot to take a break and enjoy a packed lunch. The final stretch of the trail takes you through open meadows and past a small, picturesque pond before looping back to the starting point.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively flat and easy, allowing you to cool down as you make your way back to the trailhead. This section offers a mix of open fields and shaded paths, providing a pleasant end to your hike.
Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a nature enthusiast, the Great Wood, Kildridge Wood, and Park Wood Loop offers a diverse and enriching experience. Make sure to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking boots, and check the weather forecast before setting out.
