Grangelands and Pulpit Hill, Maple Wood, Lodge Hill, Coombe Hill and Hobb's Hill Loop

This easy-going loop of about 13 km / 8.1 miles explores a particularly varied stretch of the Buckinghamshire Chilterns, linking open chalk grassland, beech woodland, ridge-top viewpoints and one of the area’s most interesting prehistoric sites. Expect roughly 200 m / 656 ft of total ascent spread across a series of gentle to moderate rises rather than one long climb, so it suits walkers who are comfortable with a few hills but don’t want a strenuous mountain day. Landmarks, scenery and notable sections

One of the standout landmarks is Coombe Hill Monument, erected in 1904 as a memorial to the men of Buckinghamshire who died in the Boer War. Coombe Hill also has a history tied to public access: in 1906, local protests were held here after fencing and stiles threatened traditional access, and the hill later became an important ceremonial point on the Ridgeway, including the formal opening of the National Trail in 1973.
