To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Esholt, a village near Bradford, and look for parking near the Esholt Sports and Leisure Club. For those using public transport, take a train to Apperley Bridge Station, which is about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the trailhead. From the station, you can either walk or take a local bus to Esholt.
The trail begins near the Esholt Sports and Leisure Club, where you can find ample parking. As you start, you'll be greeted by the lush greenery of Esholt Woods. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more undulating sections ahead.
Esholt Woods is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for native bird species such as woodpeckers, nuthatches, and various types of finches. The dense canopy provides a cool, shaded environment, perfect for a leisurely walk.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll transition into Gill Wood.
