Trail Overview

The trail begins at Dinton Pastures Country Park, a popular spot for families and nature enthusiasts. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the serene waters of Colebrook Lake North. This area is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as herons, kingfishers, and various waterfowl frequently spotted. The first section of the trail meanders along the lake's edge, offering picturesque views and plenty of opportunities for photography.

Coalpit Copse

Around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll enter Coalpit Copse, a beautiful woodland area that provides a stark contrast to the open lakeside. The copse is rich in biodiversity, with ancient oak and beech trees towering overhead. Keep an eye out for woodland creatures like squirrels and a variety of songbirds. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, adding a splash of color to your hike.

Historical Significance

Coalpit Copse has a rich history, with evidence of ancient charcoal burning pits that date back to medieval times. These pits were used to produce charcoal for iron smelting, an important industry in the region during that period. As you walk through the copse, you may notice some of these historical remnants, adding an educational element to your hike.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain is relatively flat, but the woodland sections can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, perfect for a rest or a snack break.

Final Stretch

As you exit Coalpit Copse, the trail loops back towards Colebrook Lake North. This final stretch offers more lakeside views and a chance to spot additional wildlife. The loop concludes back at Dinton Pastures Country Park, where you can take advantage of the park's facilities, including a café, restrooms, and a playground for children.

This 6 km loop is a perfect blend of lakeside scenery and woodland exploration, making it a rewarding hike for nature lovers and history buffs alike.
