Wellington Woods

Starting from Bedford Park, the trail first takes you into Wellington Woods. This area is known for its dense canopy of oak and beech trees, providing a cool, shaded environment even on warmer days. Keep an eye out for the various bird species that inhabit this area, including woodpeckers and songbirds. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, creating a picturesque scene.

Bulge Wood

As you transition into Bulge Wood, the landscape opens up slightly, offering more sunlight and a variety of flora. This section is particularly rich in wildflowers during the summer months. The trail here is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. Bulge Wood is also home to several small mammals, so you might spot a fox or a rabbit if you're lucky.

Lakeview Wood

The final section of the loop takes you through Lakeview Wood, which, as the name suggests, offers stunning views of a nearby lake. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a picnic. The lake attracts various waterfowl, including ducks and swans, making it a peaceful and scenic part of the hike. The trail here is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it a relaxing end to your journey.

Historical Significance

The area around Bedford has a rich history dating back to medieval times. While the woods themselves are primarily natural, the nearby Bedford Castle Mound is a significant historical landmark. Wildlife and Flora

Throughout the trail, you'll encounter a diverse range of wildlife and plant species. The woods are home to deer, badgers, and a variety of bird species. In the spring and summer, the trail is adorned with wildflowers, making it a vibrant and colorful hike.

Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's suitable for families and casual hikers. However, it's always wise to wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months. The trail can get muddy after rain, so be prepared for potentially slippery conditions.
