Loop
“A sun-washed loop from Vrbnik threads vineyards, stone-walled karst, and hidden coves to sandy Sveti Marak.”
This easy coastal-and-village circuit on the eastern side of Krk Island links Vrbnik with Risika, Javna Cove, and the Sveti Marak peninsula in a route of about 14 km / 8.7 miles with roughly 300 m / 985 ft of ascent. The walking is generally straightforward, but the mix of village lanes, farm tracks, low karst terrain, and coastal paths means it still deserves a bit of planning, especially in warm weather and on exposed sections above the sea. The route is known for combining cultural heritage with hidden coves, dry-stone landscapes, and one of the island’s rarer sandy beach areas near Sveti Marak. (krk-outdoor.hr)
The hike begins near Vrbnik’s historic center, the most practical landmark for the start being Placa Vrbničkog statuta 4, 51516 Vrbnik, beside the Vrbnik Tourist Board in the old town area. If you are driving, Vrbnik has official municipal parking areas, and starting from the town makes the most sense for this circuit. If you want the nearest significant landmark rather than a street address, use Vrbnik old town / Placa Vrbničkog statuta as your target. (krk.hr)
By car, Vrbnik is reached on the eastern side of Krk Island, which is connected to the mainland by the Krk Bridge. The island lies about 30 km / 18.6 miles from Rijeka, so most visitors arrive by crossing onto Krk and then following island roads toward Vrbnik. If using public transport, the most realistic option is to travel by bus to Vrbnik via Arriva Croatia services; schedules can vary seasonally, so it is wise to check the current timetable before setting out. (krk.hr)
The opening section usually leaves Vrbnik through or just beyond its stone streets and edges into the agricultural landscape behind town. Expect a gentle start through a distinctly Krk setting: dry-stone walls, scrubby karst ground, pockets of low woodland, and cultivated land tied to the area’s long farming and wine-growing tradition. Vrbnik is especially associated with Žlahtina, the island’s best-known indigenous white grape, and the surrounding fields help give the first part of the walk a quieter inland character before the route swings toward the coast. (krk.hr)
Although the overall difficulty is easy, the route is long enough that it feels more like a half-day outing than a short stroll. Around 14 km / 8.7 miles with 300 m / 985 ft of climbing usually means a comfortable but steady day for most walkers. The ascent is not concentrated in one major climb; instead, it tends to come in smaller undulations between town, village, and coast. Surfaces can include paved stretches, gravel tracks, compact dirt, and rougher rocky sections near the coves. Good walking shoes are usually enough, but sandals are a poor choice away from the beach. (krk-outdoor.hr)
Navigation is usually easiest when the route is followed as a loop from Vrbnik toward Risika and then down to the coast. Because there are multiple local tracks in this part of Krk, carrying the route in HiiKER is the simplest way to stay on the intended line, especially where farm roads and side paths branch off inland or near the coves.
As the route approaches Risika, the landscape opens into a quieter rural settlement zone. Risika itself is a small village on the eastern side of Krk and has long been tied to the agricultural life of the island. This middle section is often the least dramatic visually, but it helps explain the character of the area: a lived-in countryside shaped by grazing, stonework, and seasonal cultivation rather than purely resort development. The most memorable part of the hike comes when the route drops toward the sea. Here the inland karst gives way to coves, pines, and open Adriatic views. Official trail information notes that the route passes Javna Cove and then
