Loop
“A breezy Krk loop weaves pebble shores, rocky cape, salt marsh, and shady woodland.”
This easy coastal loop on the island of Krk gives a lot back for a relatively short outing. Expect roughly 6.5 km / 4 miles with about 131 m / 430 ft of ascent, starting near Kijac in the Omišalj municipality and circling out to Cape Ćuf before returning inland through light forest. The walking is generally straightforward, but the terrain changes enough to keep it interesting: pebbly shoreline, rougher rocky sections, and a gentle climb back through karst and woodland. (krk-outdoor.hr)
The start is best understood as being near Kijac Beach, Kijac/Njivice, Omišalj, Krk Island, Croatia, which is the clearest nearby landmark for planning arrival and parking. Kijac is part of the wider Omišalj area and sits close to the coast, making it a practical access point for the loop. Parking is available near Kijac Beach, and if you are arriving by car, this is the simplest target for navigation. (visit-omisalj-njivice.hr)
If using public transport, the most practical hub is Omišalj. Rijeka Airport, which is on Krk near Omišalj, has a bus connection to the central bus station in Omišalj, and Omišalj is then the logical transfer point for reaching Kijac locally by taxi, local bus where available, or on foot only if you are prepared for a longer approach. Because local island bus patterns can be seasonal, it is wise to confirm the latest timetable before setting out. (rijeka-airport.hr)
From Kijac, the trail heads southwest along the coast toward Cape Ćuf. Early on, the walking is relaxed and open, with a long pebble beach and broad sea views that make this a good route for hikers who want scenery without a demanding climb. The coast then becomes rockier, and the path threads through shade from oaks and pines. Even on an easy trail, these uneven limestone sections deserve attention, especially if the rock is polished, damp, or covered with loose grit. (krk-outdoor.hr)
One of the most distinctive natural features on the route is Slatin Pond, a small salt marsh that is considered a rare habitat in the Kvarner region. In drier parts of the year it may partially dry out, so what you see can vary by season, but it remains one of the key ecological highlights of the walk. This is the sort of place where the trail shifts from being simply scenic to genuinely interesting from a nature perspective. (krk-outdoor.hr)
After the coastal section and the cape, the route turns inland and climbs gradually through forest before looping back toward Kijac. The ascent is modest rather than strenuous, but in warm weather the exposed coastal stretches can feel hotter than the numbers suggest. Carry water, use sun protection, and do not assume the short distance means no preparation is needed. (krk-outdoor.hr)
For most hikers, this is a half-day outing at an unhurried pace. Allow extra time if you plan to stop at the shoreline, watch birds around the marsh, or explore the cape viewpoints. Footwear with decent grip is more useful than heavy boots here; the main issue is not steepness but irregular rock and occasional loose coastal footing. (krk-outdoor.hr)
Because the route combines shoreline and inland sections, it helps to follow the track carefully, especially where paths split near the coast or re-enter wooded ground. If you want a navigation aid, use HiiKER and check the loop before starting so you know where the coastal leg ends and the inland return begins.
This trail stands out for biodiversity packed into a short distance. Around Slatin Pond, wetland birds and dragonflies are specifically noted, while the rushes support dense spider webs and the surrounding stones are home to ruin lizards. Along the rest of the route, the mix of pebble beach, rocky shore, salt influence, and Mediterranean tree cover creates a varied edge habitat that can feel quite different from one
