Loop
“From ancient Glagolitic heritage to sun-bleached heights, this loop offers a stirring, exposed valley escape.”
This medium-difficulty walk links one of Croatia’s most important cultural sites with a short but rewarding climb above the Baška valley, then loops back through Bašćanska draga on a route of roughly 6 km / 3.7 miles with about 200 m / 656 ft of ascent. The route begins in Jurandvor at the Church of St. Lucy, where the Baška Tablet was found, then climbs toward the Zakam viewpoint before descending toward Baška and returning through the valley settlements. Official local trail information places the start in Jurandvor near the St. Lucy complex, and the Zakam junction sits at about 170 m elevation, with a nearby viewpoint marked by a wooden cross and bench. The nearest clear starting landmark is Church of St. Lucy, Jurandvor b.b., 51523 Baška, Croatia, in the village of Jurandvor just inland from Baška. Jurandvor lies about 2.5 km / 1.6 miles from Baška, making it easy to reach on foot, by local road, or as a short drive from the coast. (visitbaska.com)
Expect a route that mixes village lanes, stony island footpaths, and open hillside terrain. Although the distance is modest, the limestone underfoot can be uneven and polished in places, so sturdy footwear matters more here than the mileage suggests. In warm weather, the exposed sections can feel much harder than the numbers imply because shade is limited. The Baška area is also known for strong bura winds sweeping down from the Velebit range toward the southern part of Krk, which can make ridgeline and viewpoint sections feel significantly more serious. (visitbaska.com)
The opening section is the most historically rich part of the walk. Starting beside St. Lucy’s Church, you are in a landscape layered with Roman, early Christian, and medieval remains. The church complex includes an archaeological park with the excavated foundations of a Roman villa rustica and an early Christian basilica, while the church itself is tied directly to the Baška Tablet, one of the key monuments of Croatian literacy, history, and statehood. The original tablet dates to around the year 1100 and is closely associated with the Glagolitic script, which is deeply rooted in this part of Krk. (visitbaska.com)
From Jurandvor, the trail begins to rise gradually out of the settled valley. This climb is not especially long, but it is the main effort of the day, accounting for most of the 200 m / 656 ft of ascent. As you gain height, the views widen over the Baška basin, with the villages of Jurandvor, Batomalj, and Draga Bašćanska spread across the valley floor and the Adriatic opening beyond Baška. The terrain becomes more characteristically Krk-like here: pale rock, low shrubs, dry grass, and a broad sense of exposure. (krk-outdoor.hr)
Near the Zakam crossway, a short detour leads to the viewpoint. This is one of the standout moments of the hike, with a bench and wooden cross overlooking Baška, the church below, and the surrounding slopes. It is a good place to pause, but in windy conditions it is worth taking extra care near edges and on loose rock. (krk-outdoor.hr)
The defining landmark is the Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor, both for its architecture and for its connection to the Baška Tablet. The wider Baška valley is also notable for the Baška Glagolitic Trail, a cultural landscape feature made up of stone sculptures of Glagolitic letters placed at important sites around Baška, Jurandvor, Batomalj, and Draga Bašćanska. Even when this specific hike is focused on Zakam, the whole area carries that strong Glagolitic identity. (visitbaska.com)
Natural scenery is shaped by the dry, rocky character of southern Krk. Hikers should expect Mediterranean scrub, grasses, scattered low trees, and open karst ground rather than dense forest. In spring and early summer, the valley and lower slopes are usually at their most colorful, while high summer brings harsher light, heat, and very dry ground. The route is well suited to
