Out and Back
“A stony, sun-struck climb rewards prepared hikers with sweeping island and mainland panoramas.”
This demanding out-and-back loop from Draga Bašćanska climbs into the stony high ground above the Baška valley, linking the island’s highest summit, Obzova, with the Kunjalabor viewpoint for wide views toward Baška and the Northern Velebit range across the Velebit Channel. The route is usually listed at about 7 km / 4.3 miles with roughly 500 m / 1,640 ft of ascent, and although the distance is modest, the terrain makes it feel more serious than the numbers suggest. Expect a sustained climb, exposed karst, uneven rock underfoot, and very little shelter once you leave the lower slopes. (visitbaska.com)
The walk starts in Draga Bašćanska, a village inland from Baška on the island of Krk. The nearest clear landmark for the trailhead is the settlement itself, with local hiking routes beginning from Draga Bašćanska village / bus stop area rather than a remote standalone address. Official local trail information identifies Draga Bašćanska as the starting point for this route. (visitbaska.com)
The opening section rises from the valley through lower vegetation and into increasingly open limestone country. Early on, the path heads toward Na Plakari, a key trail junction on the upland, before branching toward Obzova. From there the route reaches Obzova at 569 m / 1,867 ft, marked on a broad karst plateau by a stone summit marker rather than a dramatic needle-like peak. After returning toward Na Plakari, the route continues to Kunjalabor viewpoint, where the panorama opens over the Baška valley and across to the Velebit massif, before descending back to Draga Bašćanska. For a hike of only around 7 km / 4.3 miles, this one packs in a lot of effort. The ascent averages out to roughly 70 m per km, or about 230 ft per mile, but the challenge comes less from the gradient on paper and more from the footing. Much of the upper route crosses bare karst and rocky mountain pasture, where the trail can be rough, angular, and tiring on ankles and knees. In wet weather, polished limestone can become slick; in hot weather, the exposed stone reflects heat and there is little shade. (krk-outdoor.hr)
Navigation is straightforward only if you stay attentive at junctions, especially around Na Plakari where multiple paths meet. This is a route where it is worth checking the line carefully on HiiKER before setting out and again at each major split. In mist, low cloud, or strong wind, the open plateau can feel much bigger and less obvious than expected. (krk-outdoor.com)
Because the hike is rated difficult, strong footwear is more important than speed. Trekking poles can help on the descent, especially where loose stone and uneven rock combine with tired legs. Carry more water than the distance alone suggests; local long-distance route guidance for Krk emphasizes generous water planning in this landscape, and the exposed nature of the Obzova area makes that especially relevant in warm conditions. (tz-krk.hr)
The defining feature of the route is the contrast between the fertile Baška valley below and the stark, wind-shaped uplands above. Draga Bašćanska lies in the most fertile part of the valley, but the trail quickly leaves that gentler setting for a harsher limestone world of rock, grass, and low vegetation. This transition is one of the most memorable aspects of the walk. (visitbaska.com)
Obzova is the highest point on Krk Island and the natural high point of the outing. The summit itself is broad and understated, but the reward is the sense of elevation over the island’s interior and coast. The second major highlight, Kunjalabor viewpoint, is where many hikers linger longest, thanks to the open view over Baška, the Bašćanska valley, and the Northern Velebit mountains on the mainland.
