“A pine-scented ridge loop above Lapad blends shady climbs, rocky variety, and sparkling Adriatic glimpses.”
This short loop on Dubrovnik’s Lapad Peninsula packs a surprising amount into roughly 5 km / 3.1 miles, with about 300 m / 985 ft of cumulative elevation gain. Although the high point of Velika Petka is only about 192 m / 630 ft above sea level, the repeated ups and downs, mixed surfaces, and occasional steeper pitches make it feel like a solid medium outing rather than a simple promenade. The walk is set in the protected park-forest of Velika and Mala Petka above Lapad Bay, a green ridge close to Dubrovnik’s hotel zone and beaches. The area is known for dense Aleppo pine, Mediterranean macchia and garrigue, and it serves as habitat for numerous songbirds. The protected landscape status dates to 1987, when Velika and Mala Petka were designated as a park-forest by the Dubrovnik municipal assembly. (geocaching.com)
For most hikers, the most practical place to begin is near Put na vrh Petke, the access road and walking approach above the Lapad/Babin Kuk area, with the Hotel Palace Dubrovnik area commonly used as the nearest major landmark for reaching the trail network. Local information also points to bus line 4 as a useful public transport option, with the Hotel Palace stop serving as a convenient access point for the ascent toward Mala Petka. (geocaching.com)
Expect a compact loop with two distinct personalities. The Velika Petka side is generally easier underfoot, with broader and in places more developed walking surfaces, while the Mala Petka side is rougher, rockier, and a little more uneven. That contrast is one of the reasons the route feels more interesting than its modest distance suggests. (nextontrip.com)
From the lower access paths, the climb begins gradually through shaded pine forest. Early on, the route feels sheltered and local, with the sea often hidden behind the trees. After roughly 1 to 1.5 km / 0.6 to 0.9 miles, the trail steepens as it works upward toward the ridge. This is where the elevation gain becomes more noticeable, especially in warm weather. The shade helps, but the rocky Mediterranean ground still demands attention. (dubrovnik-online.net)
As you gain height, openings in the trees begin to reveal Lapad Bay, Babin Kuk, the Adriatic, and offshore island views. Depending on the exact line you follow through the network of intersecting paths, you may also get outlooks toward Lokrum, Cavtat, and the wider Dubrovnik coastline. (geocaching.com)
Velika Petka is the more prominent summit, rising to about 192 m / 630 ft, and it is the main viewpoint objective on the loop. The top and upper slopes offer broad sea views, especially toward Lapad Bay and the Elaphiti Islands, including Koločep and Lopud. Some viewpoints also look back across the built-up peninsula toward Dubrovnik’s coastal neighborhoods. (dinarskogorje.com)
Mala Petka is lower and often feels quieter, with a more natural, less manicured character. The approach here is typically on gravelly, stonier ground, so this section is where hikers should be most careful with foot placement. In dry conditions the loose surface can be slippery; after rain, polished rock and dust over stone can be awkward. (nextontrip.com)
Cliff edges and exposed rocky sections exist in parts of the Petka area, so it is worth keeping children close and avoiding shortcuts onto unmarked side tracks. Even though this is close to the city, it is still proper hiking terrain in places rather than a park stroll all the way through. (geocaching.com)
If you are planning the route in advance, use HiiKER to check the loop shape and junctions carefully. The trail network on Petka is not especially long, but there are enough intersecting paths that it helps to know which branch you want before setting off.
