“Shaded forest, sea-cliff drama, and Fort Royal make this Lokrum loop short yet richly rewarding.”
This roughly 5 km / 3.1 mile loop on Lokrum Island packs a lot into a short outing: shady woodland paths, a Napoleonic-era fort, a historic water reservoir, and a rugged stretch of coast above Uvala Velika Spila. With only about 100 m / 330 ft of elevation gain, it is not a long hike, but the uneven limestone underfoot, short climbs, and exposed rocky sections make the overall effort feel solidly medium rather than easy. Lokrum itself is a protected special forest vegetation reserve, with forest covering about 90% of the island, and visitors are required to stay on marked footpaths and leave with the last official boat. (pvdp.hr)
The route begins near the main arrival area at Portoč Cove on Lokrum, beside the Forester’s House visitor area, the island’s main landing point and visitor reception. If you are converting the trailhead to a practical landmark, the nearest significant start point is Portoč / the Forester’s House on Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik, Croatia. Organized transport to the island runs from Luža at Dubrovnik Old City Port, and the official Lokrum boat ride takes about 15 minutes. If arriving in Dubrovnik by car, the practical approach is to park on the mainland near the Old City or Gruž area, then continue on foot or by city bus toward the Old City Port; from Gruž, the Port of Dubrovnik notes that buses to Pile near the Old City typically take around 10 to 15 minutes. The opening section is usually the gentlest part of the walk, following broad island paths through dense Mediterranean vegetation. Expect holm oak and pine shade, dry stone edges, and the kind of compact dirt-and-rock surface that can become polished and slippery in damp weather. Because Lokrum is protected as both a nature reserve and part of the wider historic complex of Dubrovnik, the paths often feel more curated than wild, but the terrain is still natural enough that sturdy shoes are worthwhile even on a short loop. The main ascent comes early as the route heads toward Fort Royal, the island’s highest and most commanding landmark. The climb is short rather than strenuous, gaining much of the route’s roughly 100 m / 330 ft of elevation over a relatively compact distance. Switchbacks and rising woodland tracks lead to the summit area at Glavica, about 96 m / 315 ft above sea level, where the fort stands over the island. (pvdp.hr)
Fort Royal is one of the most important historical features on the hike. The French began building it in 1806 after recognizing Lokrum’s strategic importance for controlling the sea approach to Dubrovnik; after the Austrian takeover in 1815, the fort was expanded and strengthened, reaching its final form in 1835. From here, hikers can expect wide views over Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the Adriatic, Cavtat, and nearby islands, making this the natural high point of the loop in both scenery and historical interest. (pvdp.hr)
After the fort, the route eases into a more rolling middle section. The “Big water Reservoir” element of the walk reflects Lokrum’s long history of water collection and garden management. On the island, a network of channels once directed rainwater into cisterns and reservoirs, including water infrastructure associated with the 19th-century period of Archduke Maximilian’s ownership and landscaping works. Even if the reservoir itself feels understated compared with the fort or sea views, it adds an important layer to understanding how this small island supported gardens, visitors, and seasonal use despite having no natural freshwater streams. As the loop bends toward Uvala Velika Spila, the atmosphere changes from enclosed forest to a more open coastal edge. Uvala Velika Spila is a bay on the southeastern side of Lokrum, and this
