The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) will see you gaining about 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation. This section is relatively shaded, providing a cool and serene start to your hike. Keep an eye out for mule deer and the occasional black bear, which are known to inhabit this area.### Mid-Trail Highlights As you continue, the trail opens up to a series of meadows around the 3 km (1.8 miles) mark. Here, you’ll gain another 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation. These meadows are often filled with wildflowers during the spring and summer months, offering a colorful and picturesque landscape. This is also a great spot for birdwatching; species like the Mountain Bluebird and Red-tailed Hawk are commonly seen.### Historical Significance Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) point, you’ll come across remnants of old mining operations. Be cautious while exploring these areas, as they can be unstable.### Reaching Hawn Mountain The trail then begins a steeper ascent towards Hawn Mountain. Over the next 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains. This is an excellent spot for a break and some photography.### Descending to Willow Creek The descent towards Willow Creek is more gradual, covering the final 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop. This section of the trail follows the creek, providing a soothing soundtrack of flowing water.
