This out-and-back trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it accessible to hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the trailhead, hikers can drive to the vicinity of Lake City, Colorado. From there, head south on Highway 149 and take the turnoff onto County Road 30 towards the ghost town of Animas Forks. The trailhead is accessible by car, although a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended due to the rough terrain. Public transportation options are limited in this remote area, so driving is the most feasible option for reaching the starting point.

Navigating the Trail

Hikers can utilize the HiiKER app for detailed navigation throughout the trail. The app provides up-to-date maps and trail information, ensuring that hikers can stay on the correct path and be aware of any changes in trail conditions.

Trail Experience

As you embark on the Cinnamon Pass Road Trail, you'll be greeted by the rugged landscape of the San Juan Mountains. The trail gradually ascends, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The first section of the trail is relatively gentle, with a mix of forested areas and open meadows.

Historical Significance and Landmarks

The trail is steeped in history, as it was once used by miners to access the rich ore deposits in the area. Along the route, hikers will encounter remnants of the mining era, including old mine shafts and the ghost town of Animas Forks, which is located approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the trailhead. This abandoned settlement provides a glimpse into the lives of the miners who once called this rugged terrain home.

Flora and Fauna

The diverse ecosystem along the trail supports a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and black bears. Hikers should be aware of their surroundings and know how to safely encounter wildlife. The trail also passes through areas of alpine tundra, where hardy plant species such as wildflowers and shrubs thrive despite the harsh conditions.

Preparing for the Hike

Due to the trail's elevation and length, it's important to be well-prepared. Hikers should bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and layers of clothing to adapt to the changing weather conditions that are common in the mountains. It's also advisable to start the hike early in the day to ensure enough daylight to complete the journey.

Weather and Safety

The high elevation means that weather can change rapidly, and hikers should be prepared for the possibility of thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. It's crucial to check the weather forecast before setting out and to be prepared with appropriate gear, including rain protection and warm layers.
