It's rated as extra difficult due to its steep inclines and rugged terrain, so it's essential that hikers come prepared with proper gear and a good level of fitness.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the vicinity of Ouray County. If you're coming from Ouray, take US-550 S for about 10 minutes until you reach County Road 361. Follow this road for another 10 minutes, and you'll find the trailhead on your left. There is no direct public transportation to the trailhead, so a personal vehicle or a taxi service is your best bet.

The Hike Itself

As you embark on the Stealey Mountain South Trail, the first section will take you through a dense forest, offering shade and a bit of respite before the real climb begins. The trail is well-defined, but due to its challenging nature, it's recommended to use a navigation tool like HiiKER to keep track of your progress and ensure you're on the right path.

After about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), the forest starts to open up, and you'll be greeted with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The ascent becomes steeper here, and the terrain more rugged. You'll encounter a series of switchbacks that will test your endurance.

Landmarks and Scenery

As you gain elevation, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area. You might spot mule deer, elk, and various bird species. Remember to keep a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter.

Around the halfway mark, at approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles), you'll reach a notable landmark: an expansive alpine meadow that offers a picturesque spot for a rest. The meadow is a burst of color in the spring and summer months, with wildflowers dotting the landscape.

Historical Significance

The region around Ouray County is rich in history, with the area being a hub for mining in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As you hike, you may notice remnants of this past, including old mine shafts and structures. These historical artifacts serve as a reminder of Colorado's mining heritage.

Final Ascent and Descent

The last stretch to the summit of Stealey Mountain South is the most challenging, with rocky outcrops and a steep incline. The summit offers panoramic views that are well worth the effort. After taking in the scenery, you'll retrace your steps back down the mountain, which can be just as demanding as the ascent. Be sure to pace yourself and watch your footing on the descent.

Preparation and Safety

Given the trail's difficulty, it's crucial to come prepared with plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions. A first-aid kit, map, and compass are also essential, even if you're using a digital navigation tool. Always let someone know your hiking plans and expected return time.

Remember, the Stealey Mountain South Trail is a test of both physical and mental strength. With the right preparation and respect for the trail, it can be an incredibly fulfilling experience that offers a glimpse into the rugged beauty of the Colorado wilderness.
