Starting your adventure near Mesa County, Colorado, the Quad Rocker, Roll Over Ridge, and Easy Rider Loop Trail offers a delightful 5 km (approximately 3.1 miles) journey with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, the Colorado National Monument Visitor Center, located at 1750 Rim Rock Drive, Fruita, CO 81521. From there, it's a short drive to the trailhead. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is at the Fruita Community Center, from where you can take a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent, allowing you to warm up as you navigate through a mix of juniper and pinyon pine trees. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), you’ll reach the first significant landmark, a large rock formation known locally as "The Sentinel." This is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos.
Continuing on, the trail transitions into the Quad Rocker section, characterized by its undulating terrain. Here, you’ll encounter a series of small hills and valleys, offering both ascents and descents that will challenge your legs and lungs. This section is approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) long and gains about 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation.
As you approach the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you’ll find yourself on Roll Over Ridge. This part of the trail offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Mesa County landscape. The ridge is relatively flat but exposed, so be prepared for windier conditions. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as mule deer and various bird species, including hawks and eagles.
The final section, Easy Rider Loop, is a more relaxed descent back towards the trailhead. This 1.5 km (0.9 miles) stretch is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and reflect on your hike. The trail meanders through a picturesque valley, dotted with wildflowers in the spring and early summer.
The area around Mesa County is rich in history. The trail itself passes through lands that were once inhabited by the Ute people, and you may come across ancient petroglyphs etched into the rocks. These carvings offer a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people who once roamed these lands.
