The Pool and Cub Lake Loop Trail

Embarking on the Pool and Cub Lake Loop Trail, hikers will find themselves exploring the scenic heart of Rocky Mountain National Park near Larimer County, Colorado. This approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) journey offers an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet), presenting a moderately challenging adventure suitable for those with some hiking experience.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the starting point of the Pool and Cub Lake Loop Trail, visitors can drive to the Moraine Park area, which is accessible from the Beaver Meadows Entrance Station on US Highway 36. Once in Moraine Park, follow the signs to the Cub Lake Trailhead, where parking is available. For those opting for public transport, the park operates a shuttle service during peak season, which stops at various points throughout the park, including Moraine Park.

Navigating the Trail

The loop can be tackled in either direction, but many choose to start on the Cub Lake Trail, which begins in a meadow known for its high likelihood of elk and deer sightings, especially during the early morning or late evening. The trail then meanders through aspen groves, which are particularly stunning in the fall when the leaves turn a vibrant gold.

After approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), hikers reach Cub Lake, a serene spot surrounded by lily pads and often frequented by ducks and other waterfowl. From here, the trail climbs to the lake's eastern side, offering views of the surrounding peaks and the Big Thompson River valley.

Landmarks and Wildlife

Continuing on, the trail descends to The Pool, a notable landmark where the waters of Fern Creek and the Big Thompson River converge. This area is a tranquil place to rest and enjoy the sound of the flowing water. The trail follows the river, providing ample opportunities to spot beavers, otters, and various species of birds.

Historical Significance

The region holds historical significance as it was once home to the Ute and Arapaho tribes before European settlers arrived. The national park itself was established in 1915, preserving the natural beauty and wildlife of the area for future generations.

Trail Conditions and Preparation

The trail is well-maintained, but hikers should be prepared for rocky sections and a few steep inclines. Weather in the Rockies can change rapidly, so it's essential to bring layers, rain gear, and plenty of water. During the winter months, the trail can be covered in snow and ice, requiring microspikes or snowshoes.
