Out and Back
“Embark on a scenic 6 km journey through Cowdrey Draw, relishing historical echoes amidst Colorado's diverse wilderness.”
Nestled near Boulder County, Colorado, the Cowdrey Draw and Marshall Valley Trail offers hikers a moderate trek through a diverse landscape, combining natural beauty with historical intrigue. Spanning approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), this out-and-back trail is a delightful challenge for those looking to explore the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
To reach the trailhead, if you're driving, head towards the town of Superior, located just a few miles southeast of Boulder. The trailhead is accessible via McCaslin Blvd, turning onto Coalton Road where you'll find a designated parking area for hikers. For those opting for public transportation, regional buses serve the area, and you can disembark at a stop close to the intersection of McCaslin Blvd and Coalton Road, from where it's a short walk to the trailhead.
As you embark on your hike, the trail meanders through open meadows, offering sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. The initial stretch is relatively flat, making it a gentle warm-up before the slight inclines begin. The path is well-maintained and marked, but having the HiiKER app can be a useful tool for navigation, ensuring you stay on the correct path.
Approximately 1.5 km (just under a mile) into the hike, you'll encounter the Cowdrey Draw portion, characterized by its rolling terrain and the occasional shade provided by scattered ponderosa pines. Here, the trail begins to ascend more noticeably, and you'll feel the gradual increase in elevation as you approach the Marshall Valley segment.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, and numerous bird species. Wildflowers bloom in the spring and early summer, dotting the landscape with color. As you hike, keep an eye out for the remnants of the area's mining history, including old mine shafts and structures that hark back to Colorado's gold rush era.
Reaching the Marshall Valley, you'll find yourself surrounded by a mix of grassland and mountain shrubland. This area is particularly significant as it serves as a habitat for the threatened Preble's meadow jumping mouse, and conservation efforts are in place to protect this delicate ecosystem.
Before setting out, ensure you have adequate water, as there are no reliable water sources along the trail. The weather can change rapidly, so layered clothing is recommended. Also, consider bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect against the strong Colorado sun.
The Cowdrey Draw and Marshall Valley Trail is a rewarding experience for those looking to enjoy a few hours of hiking in the Front Range. With its combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and a touch of history, it's a trail that offers something for everyone.
