Rice Peak from South Mount Lemmon Road

Embarking on the Rice Peak from South Mount Lemmon Road trail, hikers can anticipate a moderately challenging journey spanning approximately 18 kilometers (about 11 miles) with an elevation gain of around 900 meters (nearly 2950 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near Pinal County, Arizona, and the path is classified as an out-and-back route, which means hikers will return on the same path they ascended.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the starting point of the hike, those with access to a vehicle can drive to the vicinity of Oracle, AZ, where the trailhead is situated off South Mount Lemmon Road. There is no direct public transportation to the trailhead, so hikers without a car might consider a taxi or rideshare service from the nearest town or city.

The Hike

As you set out on the trail, the initial stretch meanders through a landscape dotted with the iconic saguaro cacti and other desert flora, offering a quintessential Arizona backdrop. The trail is well-defined and marked, but carrying a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER is recommended to stay on track and monitor your progress.

Elevation and Terrain

The ascent begins gently but becomes progressively steeper as you advance. The terrain is a mix of loose gravel and packed earth, which can be slippery in places, so sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. The trail is exposed, with little shade, so sun protection and carrying ample water are crucial, especially during the hotter months.

Landmarks and Wildlife

Approximately halfway through the hike, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that increase in steepness, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Coronado National Forest. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, javelinas, and various bird species, such as the red-tailed hawk.

Historical Significance

The region around Mount Lemmon is rich in history, with the mountain itself named after botanist Sara Plummer Lemmon. The area has been home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years, and more recently, it was a hub for mining and ranching in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Summit

Upon reaching Rice Peak, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the San Pedro River Valley and the Galiuro Mountains. The peak itself provides a perfect spot for a rest and a picnic before beginning the descent back to the trailhead.

Preparation and Safety

Before embarking on the hike, ensure you are well-prepared with enough food, water, and appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions. It's also wise to inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time. Always check the weather forecast and trail conditions beforehand, as the trail can become hazardous during inclement weather.

Remember, while the hike is rated medium in difficulty, the elevation gain and desert conditions can make it more challenging than expected, so pace yourself and take breaks as needed.
