St Cuthbert’s Way 6-Day Challenging Tour (Hillwalk Tours)

The St Cuthbert’s Way is a 100km (62 miles) long-distance National Trail that weaves through the stunning and varied landscapes of the border region between Scotland and England. Named after the 7th-century English saint, this trail lets you embark on an unforgettable journey with a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

The well way-marked route offers fabulous and for the most part easy-to-moderate walking through rolling farmland, quiet woods, hills and moorland and along the coast in the Scottish Borders and Northumberland. The hike finishes with a memorable walk across tidal sands to the spectacular Holy Island of Lindisfarne, one of England’s most famous early Christian sites.

You follow in the footsteps of St Cuthbert, from Melrose Abbey, where he began his religious life, to his final resting place on Holy Island, where he served as prior and bishop. Along the way, explore historic sites like the abbeys at Melrose and Dryburgh, the Eildon Hills, Roman Dere Street or the numerous Iron Age hillforts along the route.

The trail follows the Tweed Valley where you walk along the banks of the tranquil river, visits the picturesque village of Kirk Yetholm and crosses the ancient, rugged Cheviots with their moorlands and tors of volcanic rock, part of the Northumberland National Park.

Located in the Anglo-Scottish borders, the route passes many historical sites and reminders of the contentious history between Scotland and England throughout the centuries. Explore battlefields, charming villages, ancient market towns, medieval abbeys, impressive castles and an ever changing variety of unspoiled vistas.
