Carney Springs Waterfall and The Shaka Cave
hika · reviewed over 1 year ago
The Shaka Cave and Carney Springs Waterfall hike is a fun excursion into the mysterious Superstition Mountains AZ. Once you turn from Carney Springs trail onto the Shaka Cave / CWF trail, there is only one way in and one way out, so no confusion. There are no trail signs so the app will get you there. The canyon has both indigenous ancient history as well as mining history from a century ago. The trail starts outside the Tonto National Forest and the cave and falls are inside the Superstition Wilderness Area of the Tonto National Forest. Parking is free at Lost Goldmine East is but there are no bathroom or water services at this time. The Carney Springs Waterfall is the tallest at 230 ft. (70 m) and most attractive true waterfall in the mountains. The falls are seasonal and only flow following days of rain. The small hidden canyon at the back of Carney Springs is a unique space even when dry. The Shaka Cave was once inhabited by the Hohokam Indians so it is important that history and relics are preserved (not removed) by visitors. For the most part the trail is very easy to follow with minimal difficulty, but steep towards the cave and waterfall as to be expected. Please stay on the trails to minimize human impact within the wilderness area.
