"An epic challenge to remember from the heart of North Rim"
Embarking on the Nankoweap Trail Out and Back is a journey through the rugged beauty of the Grand Canyon's North Rim in Arizona. This approximately 38 km (23.6 miles) trek, with an elevation gain of around 2200 meters (7217 feet), is a challenging adventure that takes hikers into one of the more remote sections of the canyon.
The trailhead is accessible from the North Rim, which is less frequented by tourists compared to the South Rim. To reach the starting point, you can drive on the I-67 to the North Rim entrance of the Grand Canyon National Park. From there, follow the signs to the North Rim Visitor Center. The trailhead is located off the Point Imperial Road, which is a turnoff from the main park road before reaching the visitor center. There is no direct public transportation to the trailhead, so a private vehicle or a shuttle arranged through a tour company is necessary.
As you begin your hike, the trail descends steeply from the rim, offering breathtaking views of the canyon. The path is well-defined but can be strenuous and requires good navigation skills. Hikers can use the HiiKER app to stay on track and monitor their progress. The descent is a series of switchbacks that will take you through a variety of ecosystems, from ponderosa pine forests to scrub brush and desert flora.
Approximately 4.8 km (3 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the Nankoweap Creek, which is a good spot to rest and refill water supplies, though water treatment is necessary. The trail continues to follow the creek, and as you progress, you'll be treated to views of the Nankoweap Granaries. These ancient Ancestral Puebloan food storage sites are perched high above the canyon floor and are a testament to the historical significance of the region. The granaries are located about 5 km (3.1 miles) from the trailhead and require a short but steep detour to visit.
Further along, the trail opens up to the Nankoweap Delta, where the creek meets the Colorado River. This area, about 19 km (11.8 miles) from the trailhead, is a popular camping spot for overnight hikers and offers a chance to relax by the river. The delta also provides an opportunity to observe the diverse wildlife of the Grand Canyon, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, and a variety of bird species.
The return trip follows the same path back to the trailhead, with the ascent being particularly challenging due to the steep grade and elevation gain. Hikers should be prepared for a strenuous climb and start early to avoid the midday heat.
It's essential to be well-prepared for this hike, as the Nankoweap Trail is remote and can be very hot, especially in the summer months. Adequate water, sun protection, and sturdy hiking boots are a must. It's also advisable to check the weather conditions and obtain any necessary permits from the Grand Canyon National Park Service before setting out.
The Nankoweap Trail Out and Back offers an immersive experience into the wild and untamed heart of the Grand Canyon, providing seasoned hikers with a challenging yet rewarding adventure.
