As you embark on the trail, you'll traverse a variety of terrains, including rocky paths, shaded woodlands, and open grasslands.

Key Sections and Landmarks

• Recharge Trail (0-8 km / 0-5 miles): The initial section of the trail, known as the Recharge Trail, is relatively flat and easy, making it a good warm-up. This part of the trail is named for the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone it crosses, a crucial water source for the region. Keep an eye out for interpretive signs explaining the aquifer's importance.

• Black Hill (8-16 km / 5-10 miles): As you transition to the Black Hill section, the trail becomes more challenging with a gradual ascent. This area is known for its rugged limestone formations and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to Black Hill's summit is the most strenuous part of the hike, but the vistas are well worth the effort. Elevation gain here is about 200 meters (656 feet).

• Sendero Balcones (16-24 km / 10-15 miles): The final section, Sendero Balcones, takes you through dense woodlands and along the Balcones Escarpment. This geological fault line creates dramatic cliffs and is home to diverse flora and fauna. Look out for white-tailed deer, armadillos, and a variety of bird species. The descent from this section is gradual, making for a pleasant end to your hike.
