American Tobacco Trail

The American Tobacco Trail is a multi-use path stretching approximately 22 miles (36 kilometers) with a minimal elevation gain of around 328 feet (100 meters), making it a relatively flat and accessible route for hikers of various skill levels. The trail begins near the city of Durham in Durham County, North Carolina, and is a point-to-point trail, meaning it starts and ends at different locations.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the trailhead by car, hikers can navigate to the New Hope Church Road Trailhead, located at 1309 New Hope Church Road, Cary, NC. For those opting for public transportation, the GoTriangle bus system provides routes that get close to various access points along the trail, and from there, hikers can walk to the nearest trailhead.

Trail Experience

As you embark on the American Tobacco Trail, expect a journey through a mix of urban and rural landscapes. The trail is built on an abandoned railroad corridor, which is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy project, repurposing old rail lines for recreational use. This historical significance adds an element of nostalgia to the hike, as you'll be walking along paths once used by steam locomotives transporting tobacco.

The trail is well-maintained and primarily consists of compacted soil and crushed stone, with some sections paved, particularly closer to urban areas. The northern section of the trail, closer to Durham, offers a more urban environment, while the southern sections provide a more secluded and natural setting.

Flora and Fauna

Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the diverse ecosystems along the trail, from dense woodlands to wetlands and open fields. The trail is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, and numerous bird species. Birdwatchers should bring their binoculars to catch glimpses of cardinals, blue jays, and woodpeckers among the trees.

Landmarks and Points of Interest

One of the significant landmarks along the trail is the historic Scott King Road tobacco farm, which provides a glimpse into the region's agricultural past. Additionally, the Chatham County section of the trail features a restored railroad bridge over Northeast Creek, offering picturesque views and a perfect spot for a rest.

Navigation and Planning

For navigation along the trail, HiiKER is an excellent tool to use. It provides detailed maps and waypoints, ensuring you can track your progress and locate points of interest or amenities along the route. The trail is well-signed, but having a digital tool like HiiKER can enhance your experience and provide peace of mind.

Amenities and Accessibility

The trail is equipped with several restrooms and water fountains, particularly near the trailheads and more populated areas. Benches and picnic spots are also available for those looking to take a break and enjoy the surroundings. The trail is also wheelchair accessible, making it a great option for inclusive outdoor recreation.

Safety and Etiquette

As a multi-use trail, be prepared to share the path with cyclists, runners, and equestrians. It's important to stay to the right and pass on the left, signaling your presence when overtaking others. Pets are allowed on the trail but should be kept on a leash, and owners must clean up after them.

Preparation

Before setting out, ensure you have adequate water and snacks, especially if you plan to cover a significant portion of the trail. Weather conditions can vary, so dress in layers and wear appropriate footwear for a comfortable hike. Lastly, always let someone know your plans and expected return time for safety.

By following these guidelines and utilizing the resources available, hikers can fully enjoy the unique experience that the American Tobacco Trail has to offer.
