This is a 98.7 km loop trail rated as difficult. It is near to Waira, Hawkes’s Bay and the trail is often in a lush forest setting as it weaves around the deepest lake in New Zealand, Lake Waikaremoana, in the protected region of Te Urewera on the North Island. With 4,640 m elevation gain, a good level of fitness is required. There are huts and campsites along the route, booking is required beforehand. Dogs are not permitted. Expect the trail to take around five days to complete, but caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here.
