Black Hill is a 1335m summit within the magnificent 11,350 hectare Oxford Forest, just over 50 km NW of Christchurch. The Black Hill Track begins off the Wharfedale Track then turns off north of the saddle between the Eyre and Townshend catchments and climbs steeply to the ridge between the Foster and Dobson streams and finishes at the 6 bunk Black Hill Hut not far from the summit of Black Hill. Bed allocation is on a first come, first served basis here. Rated as difficult there are some steep sections and snow and ice make it hazardous in winter and wasps are often present in summer. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. The trail, with its forest setting is popular with bird watchers as well as campers and hikers. Dogs are allowed on the track but must be kept on a lead. This is a one to two day hike, although caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables.
