Starting and finishing at he Routeburn Shelter, the spectacular yet relatively unknown Five Passes Route is a loop tail of 60 km, situated in Mount Aspiring and Fiorland National Parks in New Zealand’s South Island. Along the way the route crosses over five passes; Fohn Saddle, Fiery Col, Cow Saddle, Park Pass and Sugarloaf Pass. This is graded a difficult hike for experienced hikers with good navigation skills; there are some way marked sections but much of it is unmarked and covers steep, rough terrain. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. No huts are on this route although there are camping grounds, a tent or shelter will need to be carried. Weather here can often be cold and wet with snow in the winter. The best time to set out on this trail is between December and March, although still be prepared for wet weather. With creek crossings and some river crossings expect wet feet at times especially after heavy rain when the creeks are swollen. This trail has a total ascent of 4191m. Dogs are not permitted in the National parks. The route will take between 4 and 6 days to complete although caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables.
