Loop
“Colourful houses, wildflower meadows, and sweeping Atlantic views make this Beara loop a true delight.”
Starting from the picturesque village of Eyeries on the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, this loop trail covers approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) with a gentle elevation gain of about 100 metres (328 feet), making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the heart of Eyeries, a village renowned for its brightly painted houses and panoramic views over Coulagh Bay.Getting ThereFor those arriving by car, Eyeries is accessible via the R571 road, with parking available near the village centre, close to the Eyeries Community Centre. Public transport options are limited, but Bus Éireann operates services to Castletownbere, the nearest large town, from where local taxis can be arranged for the final 10 km (6 miles) to Eyeries.Trail Experience and NavigationThe loop begins by weaving through the colourful streets of Eyeries before heading west towards the coastline. Hikers are treated to sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged Beara coastline almost immediately. The route is well-marked, but carrying a map or using HiiKER for navigation is recommended, especially in foggy or rainy conditions common to the region.Landmarks and Points of Interest- Coastguard Station Ruins: At roughly the halfway point, the trail reaches the old Coastguard Station, perched above the cliffs. This historic site dates back to the 19th century, when it served as a lookout for shipwrecks and smuggling activity. The ruins offer a dramatic vantage point over the bay and are a reminder of the area’s maritime heritage. - Wild Atlantic Views: The path hugs the coastline for much of the loop, with frequent opportunities to spot seabirds such as gannets and choughs. On clear days, the Skellig Islands may be visible on the horizon. - Flora and Fauna: The trail passes through heathland and wildflower meadows, particularly vibrant in late spring and early summer. Keep an eye out for foxgloves, heather, and the occasional grazing sheep.Terrain and SafetyThe route consists of a mix of quiet country lanes, grassy paths, and some rocky sections near the coast. Waterproof footwear is advisable, as the ground can be boggy after rain. The elevation gain is gradual, with no steep climbs, making it suitable for families and casual walkers. Weather can change rapidly, so bring layers and rain gear.Local Culture and AmenitiesEyeries village itself is worth exploring before or after your walk. The local pubs and cafés offer a warm welcome and a chance to sample traditional Irish fare. The village is also known for its artistic community, with several galleries and craft shops. This loop offers a blend of coastal scenery, local history, and rural tranquillity, making it a rewarding walk for those seeking to experience the wild beauty of West Cork.
