Sandsee, Herrenwies and Mehliskopfturm Loop

Getting There

Trail Overview

The loop begins with a gentle ascent through dense forest, offering a serene start to your hike. The initial section is well-marked and easy to follow, with the path gradually climbing towards the first significant landmark, Sandsee.

Sandsee

Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you will reach Sandsee, a picturesque lake surrounded by lush greenery. This is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy the tranquil environment. The lake is home to various bird species, so keep an eye out for local wildlife.

Herrenwies

Continuing from Sandsee, the trail leads you towards Herrenwies, a small village with historical significance. The village is about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the start of the trail, and the path here is relatively flat, making for an easy walk.

Mehliskopfturm

The next major landmark is the Mehliskopfturm, a lookout tower offering panoramic views of the surrounding Black Forest. The ascent to the tower is the most challenging part of the hike, with a steep climb of about 100 meters (328 feet) over 1 km (0.6 miles). However, the effort is well worth it, as the views from the top are breathtaking. On clear days, you can see as far as the Vosges Mountains in France.
