Trail Highlights

The trail begins with a gentle walk through the Wackelwald, a forest known for its unique, spongy ground. This phenomenon is caused by the high water table and the dense network of roots, creating a bouncy, almost surreal walking experience. As you progress, you'll encounter several interpretive signs that provide information about the local flora and fauna, making this trail both educational and enjoyable.

Flora and Fauna

The Wackelwald is home to a variety of plant species, including mosses, ferns, and wetland plants. Keep an eye out for the vibrant green moss that carpets the forest floor, giving the area its distinctive appearance. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of various bird species, such as woodpeckers, warblers, and owls. Small mammals like squirrels and hedgehogs are also commonly spotted along the trail.

Points of Interest

Approximately halfway through the loop, you'll come across a small wooden observation deck. This is an excellent spot to take a break and enjoy the serene surroundings. The deck offers a panoramic view of the forest and the nearby Federsee, a shallow lake that is a haven for birdlife. Bring your binoculars for a closer look at the diverse bird species that frequent the area.

Historical Significance

The region around Biberach and Bad Buchau is rich in history. The Federsee area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and numerous archaeological finds have been made here. The Federsee Museum, located nearby, showcases artifacts from the prehistoric settlements, including tools, pottery, and even remnants of ancient dwellings. A visit to the museum can provide a deeper understanding of the historical context of the area.
