Starting near the quaint village of Barley in Lancashire, England, the Pendle Hill Loop is a captivating 14 km (8.7 miles) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,297 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
#### Pendle Hill Summit At the summit, which stands at 557 meters (1,827 feet), you'll find a trig point marking the highest point. This is an excellent spot for a break and to take in the expansive views of the Ribble Valley, Forest of Bowland, and even the Yorkshire Dales on a clear day. The summit is also steeped in history, known for its association with the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612.
#### Descent to Downham From the summit, the trail descends towards the charming village of Downham. This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) and involves a descent of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). Downham is a picturesque village with traditional stone cottages and a historic church, St. Leonard's, dating back to the 15th century.
#### Return to Barley The final leg of the loop takes you back to Barley, covering around 6 km (3.7 miles). This section is relatively flat and passes through serene woodlands and open fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various bird species and, if you're lucky, deer. The path also skirts the Upper Ogden Reservoir, providing a tranquil setting for the last stretch of your hike.
